Hermanus is famous for being the Whale Watching Capital of the world. The Southern Right Whales grace the shores of Hermanus from June to December and one can see them from the cliffs in Walker Bay, by boat and even by plane.

Seventeen beautiful wine farms can be visited along the R320 in the Hemel en Aarde Valley – The perfect venues to wine away those chilly winters’ days.

  1. FynArts

The third annual FynArts Festival is just around the corner and promises to be packed with loads of entertainment, art exhibitions, shows and more. The festival kicks off on the 5th of June and ends on the 16th June.

4. Country Markets.

Locals and visitors love the array of markets on offer. The Hermanus Country Market is a lovely Saturday morning treat, with live music, fabulous food stalls, beautiful hand crafted goodies and fresh local produce. Hermanuspietersfontein has an evening market on Wednesday evenings as well as a morning market on a Saturday where one can enjoy their fine wines, a bite to eat while enjoying the music and the company of friends and family. The Hemel en Aarde Village has a morning market on a Saturday offering home-made eats, divine wines and crafts.

The cosy atmosphere of the Restaurants and Eateries in Hermanus offer something for everyone’s palate be it, Italian, Asian, French, “Boerekos”, Fusion …. One is truly spoilt for choice.

Take a stroll through the village and discover the beautiful art works and lovely book stores. Discover the amazing art on exhibition in the Galleries, find that old or new book you’ve been looking for. The village art walk meander features well-known local artists’ and their finest works.

As the recently held Walker Bay Xtreme Sports Festival proved, Hermanus is a paradise for those persons seeking adventure. Adrenaline pumping paragliding, kayaking in Walker Bay, Quad biking through the forests, Mountain Biking trails, Horse riding, hiking in Fernkloof to name but a few.

  1. Hermanus Food and Wine Festival.

The Hermanus Food and Wine Festival which takes place from 07th to 09th August, is voted one of South Africa’s Top 10 Wine Festivals. This is where one can be treated with a variety of World class Red and White wines which are sourced from Elgin to Elim and Craft beers from breweries in the Overberg Region can be sampled. With loads of good food, live entertainment, a kiddie’s play area, grass slopes and wooden benches to relax on the weekend promises to be an event you will be returning to.

  1. World Famous Cliff & Ocean Path Walks

The Hermanus coastal cliff path walk is any nature lovers dream – stretching over 10 kilometers one can enjoy the scenic ocean views, fauna and flora, relax on one of the many benches while watching the whales or even enjoy a picnic along the cliffs. The VOS coastal walk is also a beautiful ocean paved meandering walkway from Schulphoek Bay, Sandbaai in the east taking you past Onrus Beach and Lagoon all the way through to Brekfis Bay, Vermont in the west.

10. Embracing Nature in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers hiking for all from easy to challenging. The Reserve offers Mountain Biking trails, a 90min hike to Lemoenkop, a 60min hike which is pet friendly, a 90min Waterfall hike and a 120min hike to Galpin Hut. These routes all criss-cross the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, nowhere else on earth will you find such a diverse species plant per square meter, beautiful to behold. For the botanists there is a display of some of the flowers that can be found in the veld is permanently maintained at the Fernkloof Visitors’ Centre.
